Roadside Assistance This is the entry level service, with the cheapest roadside assistance, limited to a single car, motorbike, van, motorhome or any other eligible vehicle. Basic roadside assist prices start between £20 and £30 depending on the breakdown service provider you choose. If vehicle cover is too limiting for you, you can opt for personal cover but expect to pay somewhere between 30-60% more, however, you will then be insured should you break down in any car or eligible vehicle you are travelling in.
Compare CoverEach breakdown company offers slightly different levels of service, however, there are several features that all breakdown services have in common.
1. They will all attempt to fix your car at the roadside and although their success rates all vary, you can expect about an 80% chance they will fix your vehicle at the road side and send you on your way.
2. All services will tow you to a local garage if they cannot fix your vehicle at the road side in a reasonable time. Each company have their own conditions as to where and how far they will tow your vehicle, see below for more details.
3. Each company, AA, RAC and Green Flag, have limits to where you can use basic breakdown cover, one rule they all have is that you are not covered if you breakdown at your registered address or within a quarter of a mile of it. Often referred to as home start, at home or recue plus, home cover is an optional extra which some people consider essential
Although road cover will get your vehicle recovered to a local garage if you break down, national breakdown recovery will recover you to you home or any other location within the UK mainland, no matter where you break down, well worth considering if you regularly travel more than 10-20 miles from home.
