Types of Cover
Vehicle based cover - As the name suggests, this type of policy covers the vehicle not the person so if more than one person drives the car, van or motorbike then if that vehicle breaks down it will be covered.
Personal cover - Personal breakdown cover is usually more expensive, however, personal cover covers you for any vehicle you drive or are a passenger in.
Joint or family breakdown cover - Usually associated with personal cover, family or joint breakdown cover enables 2, 3 or 4 people living at one address to be covered for any vehicle they are travelling in, whether they are driving or not.
Green Flag v AA Roadside Assistance
AA Roadside Assistance for cars, vans, motorbikes and caravans offers basic breakdown cover should you break down at least 1/4 mile away from your home. If your vehicle can't be fixed at the roadside AA will tow you to a local garage. AA Roadside Rescue prices start at around £30 per year for vehicle cover. Prices are fixed, however, AA vehicle based breakdown cover is only available for vehicles under 10 years old, for older cars you will need to select the personal cover option.
Green Flag Roadside Assistance covers cars as well as small vans, motorbikes, motorhomes, pickups, caravans and trailers, it offers basic breakdown cover for vehicles under 10 years old as long as you break down at least 1/4 mile away from your home. If your vehicle cannot be fixed at the roadside you will be towed to a garage up to 10 miles away.
Green Flag v AA Home Start
AA Home Start offers assistance at home or within a quater of a mile of home, it offers the same breakdown service level as roadside cover.
Green Flag Home breakdown insurance offers break down cover at home or within 1/4 mile of your home in addition to roadside rescue which covers you for all breakdowns over 1/4 miles from home.
Green Flag v AA Breakdown Recovery
AA Relay is a recovery service that will transport you, your vehicle and up to 7 passengers to anywhere in the mainland UK if your car, or other vehicle covered, cannot be fixed at the roadside.
Green Flag Recovery will transport you, your vehicle and any passengers either to your home address, your original destination or to a local garage. They will also transport you and your vehicle if you are declared medically unfit to drive during your journey and there are no other passengers able to drive.
AA Onward Travel, or AA Stay Mobile, allows you to stay mobile while your car is being repaired. Benefits include a courtesy car for up to 72 hours, return travel fares on public transport or overnight hotel expenses. Green Flag Onward Travel cover is an add-on option, only available in conjunction with Green Flag Recovery.
